Tiger has long been documented in the history of Chinese civilisation, some of which go all the way back to a period prior to 221 BC, the so called “Xian Qin（先秦）Period”. The powerful nature of tiger makes it the perfect object of worship in ancient China, appearing in stories of Chinese magical creatures and one of the oldest domestic religions – Taoism. The Tiger worship also made its way into the lunar calendar, alongside with eleven other animals matching each year in cycle of twelve.

In modern days, the Year of the Tiger symbolizes vigour, courage, and power, which are also reflected in the repertoire we present to you in this Chinese Lunar New Year concert. In particular, we are featuring powerhouse pianist Tony Dongyi Lee, and the legendry Erhu master Tuqiang Zhang in this concert.
