Presented in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, this Lunar New Year Concert brings together vocal music, instrumental performance and Xiangsheng comedy in a vibrant cross-genre programme. Familiar melodies sit alongside contemporary works, with virtuosic violin and expressive saxophone performances adding colour and energy to the evening.
Several artists are widely recognised through appearances on China’s annual Spring Festival Gala, one of the country’s most watched cultural broadcasts, creating a sense of shared cultural memory associated with the Lunar New Year.
Designed for audiences of all ages, the concert blends music, storytelling and stage artistry to celebrate the festive season with warmth, connection and joy in one of the world’s most iconic performance spaces.

Lunar New Year Concert 2025 - Hong Kong String Orchestra’s Australian Debut
Celebrate Lunar New Year with the internationally acclaimed Hong Kong String Orchestra in their Australian debut, welcoming the Year of the Snake. Led by virtuoso Yao Jue, this 25-piece ensemble brings their masterful fusion of Eastern and Western classical music to life, performing beloved works by Vivaldi alongside traditional pieces. Don't miss this special celebration at the Sydney Opera House
The Hong Kong String Orchestra (HKSO) debuts to Australia with founder and artistic director, Yao Jue, as part of its Belt and Road Initiative concert tour in South East Asia! Well known locally and internationally for its "music uniqueness fusing Eastern and Western influences", the HKSO will perform a varied programme that demonstrates their unique aesthetics and sound.
The concert opens with a famous Chinese classical selection The Spring Festival Prelude by Li Huanzhi, and concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings in D minor by Mendelssohn. The second half comprises Chinese pieces, featuring the famous Yao Dance Driving the mule team Jasmine flowers, a Single Bamboo Can Easily Bend, and a Horseherd’s Mountain Song, and Koo Kar Fai Hong Kong Pop Song Medley arranged by Ronald Fu

The unique concert features ten outstanding young performers from the Xi'an Song and Dance Theater, forming an innovative ensemble with its halo. The 2nd China Village at NMF was held in Canberra on 16-18 February 2018. It includes a fascinating outdoor stage and some stalls to showcase the Chinese culture and arts. This is a great opportunity to experience the Chinese music and dance performances, handcraft, calligraphy, paintings, tea ceremony from China and enjoy the gastronomic delights this great culture has to offer.
This year, the China Village invites many performing groups from China including:
